Kenya Set to Boost Cement Production With Ksh 32 Billion Bamburi Cement Investment in Kwale

Kenya’s construction and infrastructure sector is set to receive a significant boost with the planned establishment of a new clinker manufacturing plant by Bamburi Cement in Matuga, Kwale County. President William Ruto has announced plans to lead the ground breaking ceremony for the project in approximately three weeks, marking another milestone in the country’s industrial development.

The project represents an investment of approximately KSh 32 billion and will feature a state-of-the-art clinker production facility with a capacity of 5,000 tonnes per day, equivalent to 1.6 million tonnes annually. Bamburi Cement's monthly clinker production capacity is anticipated to rise from one million to 2.6 million tons as a result of the expansion, while its cement manufacturing capacity is anticipated to increase from almost two million to four million tons.

Beyond strengthening local cement manufacturing, the investment is expected to generate employment opportunities, support local enterprises and encourage growth across the construction supply chain. Businesses involved in transportation, construction materials, equipment and related services are also expected to benefit from the development.

The facility will incorporate modern technology designed to support more efficient and environmentally conscious manufacturing. The increased domestic production of clinker will further strengthen Kenya’s construction materials industry, supporting the growing demand from housing, road development, infrastructure and other major projects. Increased local manufacturing capacity, new investment and stronger supply-chain opportunities signal positive momentum for the sector, creating fresh possibilities for industry stakeholders and contributing to the country's long-term infrastructure ambitions.
