Tanzania: Market Construction in Butimba to Cost Sh20 Million

CONSTRUCTION of a new market at Butimba ward in Nyamagana district, Mwanza region is expected to cost 20m/-.
Butimba Ward Executive Officer Mr Rogasian Mrema said here that the construction is expected to improve business in that area. “Upon completion of this facility, traders will use it for five years without paying rent. This is aimed at attracting as many traders as possible,” he said.
According to Mr Mrema, all preparations towards the project are in place, Mwanza City engineers have already confirmed that the construction will start soon. According to Mt Mrema, the construction will be in two phases and will take almost two years. The first phase will involve construction of twenty rooms.
The market is expected to accommodate more than 200 traders. People living in Butimba area lack a decent market, that is why traders currently conduct their businesses in small areas that have deplorable infrastructure. Butimba ward has a population of approximately 300 residents.
“The market will be of great importance to us. We have been facing serious problems and we hope the project will create some conducive working environment”, said Rosemary Lina, a business woman in the area.

Meanwhile, Butimba Ward Health Officer Adam Kiatu has advised city authorites to increase number of dumping sites in the area, to contain waste dumping. Mr Kiatu says the current dumping sites of Butimba corner, Nyegezi bus stand and Nyegezi corner were not enough. “The authorities here should double these services as the current ones fail to contain all waste produced in these areas,” he said.
