Kenya: Laws to Make Houses Cheaper

The Housing ministry is working on new laws that will make houses cheaper, minister Soita Shitanda has said. Shitanda said the bill if passed will make owning a house affordable for the lower and middle class Kenyans.

"The laws have already passed the ministry level although they will have to be passed by the next Parliament," Shitanda said. Shitanda spoke at Sarova Whitesands in Mombasa when he opened the eighth edition of the Mombasa Homes Expo organised by MySpace properties and sponsored by the Kenya Power.

Among the laws the minister outlined includes the National Housing Bill which he said is at the Attorney General's chamber for final scrutiny before being tabled in Parliament. "Once enacted, the bill will streamline the coordination and facilitation of housing development," Shitanda said.

"The ministry has also prepared a Built Environment Bill, a National Building Maintenance Policy and Building and Planning Regulations to regulate the construction industry."
