Taiwan Builds Fuel Dumps for Yundum Barracks

The Republic of China on Taiwan (ROC) Wednesday handed over two fuel dumps it built for the 1st Infantry Battalion at Yundum Barracks, to the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF). The fuel dumps are part of many built by ROC at Fajara and Farafenni Army Barracks amounting to US$167,688.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Samuel Chen, the Taiwanese ambassador to The Gambia, said the fuel dumps were built following a request by the government of The Gambia, and the main purpose was to assist in equipping the Armed Forces with capacity of modernisation and safety.

He urged the members of the Armed Forces to be loyal to their commander-in-chief, adding that through their cooperation, they were able to complete the project smoothly. He stressed that the project is based on the friendship that exists between the two countries, adding that Taiwan and The Gambia are development partners.

On his part, Major General Saikou Seckan, the deputy chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of GAF, acknowledged that Taiwan has been very supportive to the development efforts of the Gambia government, which has been highlighted in many areas. "Hardly The Gambia goes for six months without Taiwan's goodwill gesture," he said.

He noted that the gesture is Taiwan's commitment and dedication to South-South cooperation, saying that the Asian country has been creating numerous opportunities for The Gambia. "We will continue to monitor all the development projects and equipment at Yundum Barracks because the executive order and directives is to make it one of the best in West Africa," the deputy CDS added.

Gen. Seckan revealed that they are creating logistics and transport sections in GAF that will look into the activities of the vehicles. He warned everyone to be aware of the fact that the vicinity of the fuel dumps should not be used to brew 'Attaya', as it is a fire point.

Major Timothy Sanyang, commanding officer, 1st Infantry Battalion, said the fuel dumps will impact positively on Yundum Barracks, adding that they have not lost sight of Taiwan's support over the years. He also assured that the materials will be properly utilised.
