FG Approves N2 Billion for New Presidential Banquet Hall

The Federal Executive Council yesterday approved N2.2 billion for the construction of new presidential banquet hall in Abuja, FCT Minister Bala Mohammed has said.He said this while briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

He said the Banquet Hall would be executed at the cost of N2.2 billion, while the resurfacing of some selected existing roads and remedial works on bridges in Garki and Wuse 1 Districts would cost another N2.78 billion. He said that the construction of the new 150-seater Banquet Hall was awarded to Julius Berger Nig. Plc for security reasons.

The government had built a new Banquet Hall in 2003 ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

It is not clear why the government is building a new hall despite the fact that the existing one is still in good shape and is regularly being rehabilitated by Julius Berger.

However, Mohammed said the new hall would be equipped so that "National Broadcast can be done from there."

Presidential spokesman Reuben Abati said the council also approved N148.9 million for the conduct of Fiscal Allocation and Statutory Disbursement Audit for the 2007-2011 Oil and Gas Industry Audit.

Communications Minister Omobola Johnson said the council also approved about N6.3 billion contracts for the national identity cards project.
