Uganda: Makerere Starts Shs 43 Billion Construction Works

Construction of two four-storey structures at Makerere University started last week, with earth movers starting to prepare the ground for major works.

 
The buildings being constructed include one located next to the college of Business and Management Sciences (CoBAMS) and another at the school of Social Sciences (CHUSS).
 
The construction, funded by African Development Bank (ADB), is expected to last 18 months, with Excel Construction Limited executing the works.
 
According the university's director for Estates and Works, Eng Fred Nuwagaba, the infrastructural development project will cost $12.8m (about Shs 43bn); the money being a grant from ADB.
 
Eng Nuwagaba explained that the two buildings will each have a 1,000-seater auditorium and an e-learning centre. The construction is meant to tackle the shortage of teaching space at the university in CoBAMS and Chuss. In these colleges, some students are forced to use dining halls as lecture rooms.
 
The ADB grants are for improving science and technology training in higher education institutions, and some money will be reserved to renovate the psychology lab in the college of Health Sciences, chemistry lab and centralised diagnostics laboratories in the college of Natural Sciences (CoNAS).
 
Other labs to be renovated are the centralised biotechnology lab, in the college of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (Caes), the material and hydraulics lab in college of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (Cedat) and the dairy value chain at the Makerere University Agricultural Research Institute Kabanyolo (Muarik).
