Construction work at Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Nigeria to resume 2016

 Construction work at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Nigeria is expected to resume in 2016. Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the Senate adhoc committee on Aviation Chairman has announced.

 
The second runway of the airport will be in the budget list of 2016, as part of the recommended projects by Senate Kwankwaso. Besides being in the budget list, the project is also expected to be completed as scheduled with no further delays.
 
According to the Committee Chairman, further recommendation will be made concerning the airport project particularly the maintenance of the second runway and the construction equipment to be used. Regarding the maintenance, it will be conducted on both minor and major one.
 
The senate committee has seen the need to intervene with the project situation and make remarkable amendments in favor of the aviation industry.
 
The planning of the airport has been developed in phases without serious interruptions to operations. Currently, phase 1 and the presidential wing of the airport has been developed while construction work on phase 2 is ongoing.
 
Phase 1 is made up of the cargo terminal, which is the moment being used as the domestic terminal, the control tower, air traffic control, and the runway. The presidential wing comprises of the Presidential Hanger, guest chalet and the Presidential Lounge fully developed and a taxiway linking the runway.
 
Phase II of the airport currently under construction and almost complete will comprise of the first module of the international terminal building, protocol lounge, access roads, fire station, the linking of the international and presidential wings with water lines from water scheme services and a parallel taxiway.
 
Located about 40KM from Abuja City Centre, the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, has been named after the first Governor General and president of Nigeria. The airport serves both international and domestic passengers.
