Inyatsi Construction's safety management programme pays off

With 33 sites running in four different countries, the Inyatsi Construction Group achieved over one million lost time injury-free hours in October and November 2014.

The company's belief that managing health, safety and environmental risks in the workplace is paying off, boosting employee morale to increase productivity, efficiency and profit margins.

The group decided to implement the National Occupational Safety Association (NOSA) 5 star safety management system as the company standard on health, safety and environmental management during the 2011/12 financial year. This system has a proven track record of reducing the injury and fatality rates in the workplace and has become the benchmark on managing the health, safety and general well-being of all employees in the workplace across many industries.

The system was successfully audited at the beginning of the 2012/13 financial year during the NOSA Integrated 5 Star System Gap audit. The audit verified the company's system readiness for an official NOSA 5 Star rating. The entire Inyatsi Group was certified with a 3 star rating by June 2013. A year later, in June 2014, Inyatsi successfully completed the NOSA integrated audits with 81% and a 4 platinum star certification.

Enhanced performance

"Our good performance in implementing NOSA has not only enhanced business performance, but simultaneously created a safe environment for the workforce. Our goal has been to maintain a high level of safety awareness among all employees and have a zero incident/accident record measured through the reduction of the lost time injury frequency rate (LTIFR)," says Frans Pienaar, chairman of Inyatsi Construction.

By the end of June 2015, Inyatsi Construction Group Holdings achieved a lost time injury frequency rate of 0.01, an all-time excellent safety record and successful LTIFR reduction. Zambia, Mozambique and South Africa all have an LTIFR of 0 and Swaziland 0.01.
