Kenya: Mombasa Airport to Be Upgraded
PLANS are underway to expand the Moi International Airport to accommodate more planes, Transport principle secretary Nduva Muli has said.
Muli, who inspected the facility on Saturday, said there is a master plan under the country's Vision 2030, to improve and expand the airport which is a major facility in the country's aviation industry.
The PS issued a stern warning on illegal encroachment of the Kenya Airports Authority land in Mombasa where more than 30 acres have been grabbed.
The land surrounding the airport has been occupied by locals and private developers who have constructed residential homes.
"The ministry has plans to carry out a major expansion programme on the airports which will include improvement of security, safety and efficiency of the airport. Those who have encroached should take notice and leave at their own accord before action is taken. We shall not compromise," said Muli.
He said illegal development and acquisition of the airport land is compromising security and hindering expansion programs of the facility.
The move could see hundreds of residents living around the airport forced to vacate or face demolition.
