Tanzania: Dar to Spend Sh65 Billion On Road Projects
DAR ES SALAAM Region has earmarked 65bn/- for 2013/14 road projects, geared to address traffic congestion in the city.
Addressing the Dar es Salaam Regional Road Board meeting in the city on Tuesday, the Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr Saidi Meck Sadiki, said the road budget is for spot improvement, routine and periodic maintenance. "Qualified contractors should be appointed to carry out the road projects and consultant engineers should advise on a better way to complete the projects timely," said Mr Sadiki, who is also the Regional Road Board Chairman, while opening the meeting.
He said road projects would also involve construction of bridges and bus stops in different parts of the city, adding that the city fathers should ensure that projects meet deadlines.
He mentioned sources of the budget as the Road Fund, the Local Government Authorities (RALG) and own source (municipal councils).
He directed the city fathers to speed up completing roll over projects for the schemes to meet deadline of the contract period.
Mr Sadiki further said commuter service will be offered by companies from July 1, 2013, saying licences would be issued jointly by the Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit (DART) and the Surface and Marine Transport Authority (SUMATRA).
"The goal of introducing companies to run commuter buses is to curb traffic congestion in the city," he said.Meanwhile, the Dar es Salaam RC has called upon city residents in valleys to vacate the areas to avoid effects of the ongoing rains.
"The government has given the people enough time to vacate valleys to safe areas to avoid effects of the ongoing rains," he said.
