Liberia: U.S.$17,000 Bridge Project Begins

The reconstruction of a three-week old damaged bridge linking Swaggart Island with Bassa Town, and Riverview Communities opposite Stephen Tolbert Estate in District #12, Montserrado County, has commenced.

According to the Co-chairman of Bridge Reconstruction Committee, Rev. John S.W. Nyorkor, Representative Richmond Anderson of District #12 has contributed 14 bags of cement for the reconstruction process.

Rev. Nyorkor stated that Public Works Ministry has also agreed to help in the reconstruction process with red dirt, sand, rocks and engineers to do the work.

He disclosed that the cost for reconstructing the bridge is over US$17,000.

Residents in the area are said to be giving contributions for the bridge project. Each house has been charged to pay an amount of L$400.00 as contribution. The decision to support the project was reached at a community meeting two weeks ago.

The community which has over 15,000 residents is responsible to provide 75 bags of cement, 35 pieces of planks, 25 pieces of round poles, one carton of nails, 280 gallons of fuel, among others for the reconstruction of the bridge, Rev. Nyorkor said.

Rev. Nyorkor is encouraging all residents to contribute to ensure that the bridge is reconstructed as quickly as possible.
