Tanzania: Pemba to Construct Under Water Room

Zanzibar – IN efforts to attract high class tourists and boost tourism sector, investors in Zanzibar have started constructing under water room.
“This is a pilot project; we are constructing a room at about 100 metres below sea water level. More rooms will be constructed should the first project succeed,” Mr Said Ali Mbarouk, minister responsible for tourism, said here recently.
He was laying a foundation stone for the 758m/- ‘under water room’ project which is being implemented by the Manta Resort Hotel at Makangale area in Pemba. The Manager of the Hotel, Mr Metthew Sausaka Babu, said the study to have the room constructed began seven years ago, and the findings shows that Pemba is suitable for such a construction.
He said if the project is successful, Zanzibar will be the second tourist destination with such a room after Sweden. About 80 per cent of Zanzibar’s foreign income comes from tourism. In his speech after laying the foundation stone for the ‘under water room’, Zanzibar Second Vice-President, Ambassador Seif Ali Iddi, commended the hotel for being creative in promoting tourism particularly in Pemba still with ‘virgin’ beaches.
He asked Zanzibaris and investors to spare no plans and ideas which may help to boost tourism in Zanzibar, currently vital for individual and national economy. However, Mr Seif appealed to the Zanzibar Investment Promotion Agency (ZIPA) to be keen in approving investment projects.

“ZIPA should review its investment laws to avoid unworkable projects. There are some projects which have remained idle for years. This is wastage of time, land, and blockage to serious investors,” said the ambassador.
