Kenya getting ready for the future with large-scale public-private projects
The public-private partnership (PPP) model will be at a great advantage by the end of the fiscal year 2020/21. Kenya wants to make itself ready for the future and is planning to introduce US $11 billion worth of projects for the PPP Model.
The National priority List has marked down around 80 projects and is expected to get them running by June 2021 as said by the National Treasury. The Projects undertaken will look into various sectors as quoted by the Treasury Secretary Ukur Yatani in the 2020 Budget Policy Statement says, “The projects are in various sectors i.e. transport and infrastructure, energy, health, education, water and environment, housing, tourism, manufacturing, agriculture and livestock.”
The much talked about projects in road transport are the Nairobi Expressway the US $2.1 billion budgeted project; Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Highway, Lamu-Garissa-Isiolo highway and the second Nyali Bridge. The process is still on-going for the other projects like the highly anticipated US $.1.5 billion worth Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Highway and the Second Nyali Bridge.
To catch up with the Health Sector, The Private Hospita 'The Kenyatta National Hospital' to receive 300 beds. For the future of The Pwani University Teaching and Referral Hospital, Amenity Wing at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, Cancer Centre at Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital, and Upgrading of Nyamira Level 5 Hospital a team of transaction advisors to be appointed which is still in process.
In The Eduction sector, Kenyatta University student hostels is undertaken by the PPP project. While Moi University student hostels, University of Embu student hostels, and South Eastern Kenya University student hostels will be at the stage of procurement, but Projects for Egerton University and KTCC are ready for the grab.
For the Nairobi International Convention and Exhibition Centre in tourism sector which was awaiting for its feasibility study over the proposed project is now complete.
Procurements and tenders are also available in the sectors of water and environment, housing sector, agriculture and livestock and the manufacturing sector for the Special Economic Zones for Dongo Kundu and Naivasha.
