Gambia: Multi-Million-Dollar Water Project Launched in NBR

Nbr – A rural water supply project financed at the tune of US$8M was recently launched in the North Bank Region administrative town of Kerewan, designed among other things, to enhance the livelihood of the rural dwellers.
The project, funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) in conjunction with the government of The Gambia, formed part of efforts to ensure that the masses have access to clean and safe drinking water, in line with the Millennium Development Goals.
Speaking at the ceremony, the governor of the region, Lamin Queen Jammeh, described the project as important, and applauded the African Development Bank (AfDB) for complementing government’s efforts in providing quality water supply and sanitation to the citizenry.
He reaffirmed the importance government attaches to the provision of quality water supply and improved sanitation to promote health care and poverty reduction.
The governor went on to assert that quality water\ is fundamental to human development, and used the opportunity to call on beneficiary communities to support the project for its success.
The principal assistant secretary at the Ministry of Fisheries and Water Resources, Manding Saidykhan, for his part, indicated their commitment in mobilising resources to provide quality water supply and sanitation facilities for the communities of Mbalo Ebra, Mbantanding Wollof, Tambana, Touba Angalleh, Kerr Pateh, Makka Bala Manneh and Mbalo Omar in the region.
The project, he affirmed to the gathering, aims to promote personal hygiene and sanitation, with the objective of enhancing lives and livelihoods. “The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project is a four-year project aimed at providing quality water supply and sanitation,” he reiterated, further disclosing that a total of 1000 pit latrines would be put in place during the period.
Also speaking at the occasion, the head of the Rural Water Supply Project, Alhagie Jabbie, reaffirmed their commitment to promote access to quality water supply and improved sanitation by the project beneficiaries. He called on the beneficiaries and partner institutions to be proactive in the implementation.

Chief Jim Fatma Jobe of Jokadou, who also spoke at the occasion, hailed the efforts of the Ministry of Fisheries and Water Resources for its support in providing quality water supply for the rural population.
